clarias, Silurus Linnaeus [C.] 1758:306 [Systema Naturae, Ed. X v. 1; ref. 2787] America [in error, actual Africa]. Lectotype: specimen lost. Paralectotype: NRM 7044 (1). Type information and nomenclatural discussion: Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:220-221 [ref. 20707]. Type catalog: Ferraris 2007:313 [ref. 29155]. Lectotype selected by Silfvergrip 1996 as the specimen from Hasselquist's account (subsequent authors considered it possibly as NRM 7044, which was subsequently identified as Bagrus docmac) but the consequences of this selection are discussed by Ferraris 2007:313 [ref. 29155]. See Schraml 2011:27 [ref. 31440]. NRM 73 was probably not a syntype of S. clarias. See also discussion by Grant 2024:21, 22 [ref. 41266], who considers NRM 73 not as part of the type series, and the lectotype lost; a neotype designation would be desirable. •Valid as Synodontis clarias (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Poll 1971:44 [ref. 7700], Gosse 1986:117 [ref. 6194], Burgess 1989:195 [ref. 12860], Paugy in Lévêque et al. 1992:533 [ref. 21590], Willoughby 1994:26 [ref. 22047], Dankwa et al. 1999:37 [ref. 28023], De Vos 2001:48 [ref. 25362], Ferraris 2007:313 [ref. 29155], Friel & Sullivan 2008:11 [ref. 29726], Fricke 2008:18 [ref. 30182]). Current status: Valid as Synodontis clarias (Linnaeus 1758). Mochokidae: Mochokinae. Distribution: Widespread in Africa. Habitat: freshwater.
