Cobitis gongota Hamilton 1822 and Cobitis cucura Hamilton 1822 are simultaneous synonyms; first reviser is G√ľnther 1868:363 who established C. gongota as having priority -- see Kottelat 1998:118 [ref. 25861]. •Valid as Somileptes gongota (Hamilton 1822) -- (Shrestha 1978:37 [ref. 15970], Ataur Rahman 1989:152 [ref. 24860], Talwar & Jhingran 1991:532 [ref. 20764], Sen 1995:555 [ref. 23778], Menon 1999:167 [ref. 24904], Karmakar 2000:32 [ref. 25662], Ataur Rahman 2003:172 [ref. 31338], Shrestha 2008:140 [ref. 29923]). •Valid as Somileptus gongota (Hamilton 1822) -- (Menon 1992:99 [ref. 23970]). •Valid as Canthophrys gongota (Hamilton 1822) -- (Kottelat 1998:118 [ref. 25861], Kottelat 2012:23 [ref. 32367], Ahmed et al. 2013:286 [ref. 32872], Bleher 2018:294 [ref. 36647]). Current status: Valid as Canthophrys gongota (Hamilton 1822). Cobitidae. Distribution: Himalaya Foothills, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan. Habitat: freshwater.
