Lectotype selected by Chao 1978:30 [ref. 6983]. •Synonym of Menticirrhus americanus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Chao 1978:30 [ref. 6983]). •Valid as Menticirrhus gracilis (Cuvier 1830) -- (Marceniuk et al. 2020:317 [ref. 37705], Carvalho-Filho 2023:177 [ref. 40480]). Current status: Valid as Menticirrhus gracilis (Cuvier 1830). Sciaenidae. Distribution: Southwestern Atlantic: Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil). Habitat: brackish, marine.
