Appeared first as above on 8 Sept.; then in Ayres 1855:4 [ref. 18923]. Original spelling of the genus by Ayres was Hemitripteras. Authorship of this species was established as Ayres 1854 rather than Girard 1854 in Opinion 1583 in 1990. •Synonym of and junior homonym of Scorpaenichthys marmoratus Girard 1854 -- (Bolin 1944:6 [ref. 6379]). •Valid as Scorpaenichthys marmoratus (Ayres 1854) -- (McAllister 1990:201 [ref. 14674], Mecklenburg 2002:430 [ref. 25968], Nelson et al. 2004:121 [ref. 27807], Page et al. 2013:124 [ref. 32708], Pietsch & Orr 2015:44 [ref. 34694], Kells et al. 2016:192 [ref. 35888], Burton & Lea 2019:68 [ref. 37205]). Current status: Valid as Scorpaenichthys marmoratus (Ayres 1854). Cottidae. Distribution: Northeastern Pacific: southeastern Alaska (U.S.A.) south to central Baja California (Mexico). Habitat: marine.
