marmoratus, Tetrodon Lowe [R. T.] 1838:193 [Transactions of the Zoological Society of London v. 2 (pt 3, art. 14); ref. 2831] Off Madeira. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1850.11.29.28. Le Danois 1962:470 [ref. 21440] wrongly treated Tetrodon marmoratus Valenciennes 1843 as an original description with a holotype and paratype, but it is just a subsequent use of Tetrodon marmoratus Lowe 1838. Original genus should have been spelled Tetraodon. Precoccupied by the unused name Tetraodon laevissimus Bowdich 1825, but to be called a nomen protectum, Paulo Parenti, pers. comm., 16 Oct. 2017. •Valid as Sphoeroides marmoratus (Lowe 1838) -- (Shipp 1990:1071 [ref. 19531], Galeote & Otero 1996:3 [ref. 22883], Santos et al. 1997:115 [ref. 23531], Arruda 1997:123 [ref. 24952], Afonso et al. 1999:81 [ref. 25466], Galeote 2001:314 [ref. 26422], Ebert 2001:92 [ref. 25494], Mendiola 2005:5 [ref. 28208], Wirtz et al. 2007:43 [ref. 30263], Bañón & Santás 2011:1574 [ref. 31248], Wirtz et al. 2013:137 [ref. 32972], Matsuura in Carpenter & De Angelis 2016:3072 [ref. 34618]). Current status: Valid as Sphoeroides marmoratus (Lowe 1838). Tetraodontidae. Distribution: Mediterranean Sea, eastern Atlantic: Portugal south to Angola, including Azores, Madeira, Canary and Cape Verde islands. Habitat: marine.
