natalensis, Tetrodon amboinensis var. Günther [A.] 1870:303 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 8; ref. 1995] Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, southwestern Indian Ocean. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1963.12.15.24. Original genus should have been spelled Tetraodon. •Synonym of Canthigaster amboinensis (Bleeker 1864) -- (Smith & Heemstra 1986:898 [ref. 5714], Matsuura 2022:462 [ref. 40261]). •Valid as Canthigaster natalensis (Günther 1870) -- (Allen & Randall 1977:500 [ref. 6714], Winterbottom et al. 1989:70 [ref. 13251], Fricke 1999:608 [ref. 24106], Moura & Castro 2002:45 [ref. 25970], Fricke et al. 2009:122 [ref. 30213], Fricke et al. 2013:273 [ref. 32706], Arndt & Fricke 2019:31 [ref. 36883], Matsuura et al. 2020:85 [ref. 37714], Fricke et al. 2024:88 [ref. 41255]). Current status: Valid as Canthigaster natalensis (Günther 1870). Tetraodontidae. Distribution: Southwestern Indian Ocean: East Africa and South Africa, Mozambique Channel, western Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius). Habitat: marine.
