nefasch, Salmo Bonnaterre [J. P.] (ex Forsskål) 1788:169 [Tableau encyclopédique et méthodique des trois règnes de la nature... Ichthyologie; ref. 4940] Nile River, Egypt. No types known. Based on vernacular, misidentified as Salmo niloticus (non Linnaeus 1758) in Forsskål 1775:xiii, 66 [ref. 1351] (see Fricke 2008: 17[ref. 30182]). Appeared as "Le Néfasch 46. S. Nefasch..." We regard this as available, with the "S." traced back to Salmo on p. 158 and agreeing with the style of the work. Also described by Lacepède 1803 as Characinus nefasch. •Valid as Distichodus nefasch (Bonnaterre 1788) -- (Fricke 2008:17 [ref. 30182], Neumann et al. 2016:305 [ref. 35036], Akoth et al. 2023:11 [ref. 40069], Abdalla & Adam 2024:7 [ref. 42447], Musschoot 2024:337 [ref. 40817]). Current status: Valid as Distichodus nefasch (Bonnaterre 1788). Distichodontidae. Distribution: Northeastern Africa: Nile River basin. Habitat: freshwater.
