nudus, Cyclopterus Linnaeus [C.] 1758:260 [Systema Naturae, Ed. X v. 1; ref. 2787] Caribbean Sea. Syntypes: NRM 92 (1). Type catalog: Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:270-271 [ref. 20707]. See Fernholm 1978:146, figs. [ref. 31804]. Type locality erroneously given as 'India' in original description. Original description based on Linnaeus 1754:57, Pl. 27 (Fig. 1) [ref. 31115] and other sources. The surviving syntype has not been designated as the lectotype. Briggs 1955:94 [ref. 636] misidentified nudus, and considerable confusion surrond this name -- see Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:270-271 [ref 20707]. •Treated as Gobiesox nudus (Linnaeus 1758) [but misapplied on the basis of Briggs]-- (Briggs 1955:94 [ref. 637], Johnson & Greenfield 1983:45 [ref. 28991], Bussing 1987:114 [ref. 22927], Bussing 1998:247 [ref. 24179], Lim et al. 2002:88 [ref. 28310], Ferraris in Reis et al. 2003:512 [ref. 27061], Phillip et al. 2013:20 [ref. 32896], Angulo et al. 2013:994 [ref. 33194]). •Valid as Arcos nudus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Fernholm 1978:146 [ref. 31804], Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:271 [ref. 20707], Smith-Vaniz & Jelks 2014:73 [ref. 33341]). Current status: Valid as Arcos nudus (Linnaeus 1758). Gobiesocidae: Gobiesocinae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: Bahamas, Greater Antilles, Virgin Islands, Lesser Antilles and northern South America. Habitat: brackish, marine.
