Haedrich 1973:559 [ref. 7216] and Haedrich in Whitehead et al. 1986:1178 [ref. 13677] place Centrolophus pompilus of Cuvier 1833:334, which is based on Coryphaena pompilus Linnaeus 1758, in the synonymy of the later Centrolophus niger (Gmelin 1789); Haedrich regarded Linnaeus' species essentially as unidentifiable.
