Holotype (unique): USNM 29382. Correct spelling of original genus is Opistognathus. •Valid as Opistognathus rhomaleus Jordan & Gilbert 1882 -- (Allen & Robertson 1994:214 [ref. 22193], Thomson et al. 2000:195 [ref. 25640], Bussing & Lavenberg 2003:548 [ref. 27787], Nelson et al. 2004:130 [ref. 27807] dating to 1881, Love et al. 2005:113 [ref. 37547], Page et al. 2013:134 [ref. 32708], Fourriére et al. 2016:444 [ref. 34668] as Opisthognathus, Del Moral-Flores et al. 2016:608 [ref. 34923], Love et al. 2021:150 [ref. 39279]). Current status: Valid as Opistognathus rhomaleus Jordan & Gilbert 1882. Opistognathidae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Pacific coast of southern Baja California Sur (Mexico) south to Costa Rica, including Gulf of California (Mexico) and Revillagigedo Islands (Mexico). Habitat: marine.
