Based on Chaetodon rhombeus Bloch & Schneider 1801, preoccupied in Psettus by Scomber rhombeus Forsskal 1775. Available from footnote as, "Psett. Sebae, N., Chaetodon rhombeus, Bl. Schn., Seb. III, xxvi, 21." See also Cuvier & Valenciennes 1831:241, pl. 189 [ref. 4881]. We treat as a new species based on Bloch & Schneider and on Seba. Current status: Valid as Monodactylus sebae (Cuvier 1829). Monodactylidae. Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Senegal south to Angola, including Canary Islands (Spain), São Tomé and Principe; not found at Cape Verde Islands. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
