Paralectotypes: ZMB 6494 (1, dry, lost) Kamchatka, 8145 (1, dry, lost) Aleutian Is. Type catalog: Blanc & Hureau 1968:25 [ref. 20738] as paratype, Bauchot & Desoutter 1987:117 [ref. 12478], Paepke & Fricke 1992:272 [ref. 19946]. Until Orr & Blackburn 2004 [ref. 27661], this species was considered a synonym of Sebastes ciliatus. Lectotype selected by Orr & Blackburn 2004:330, 340 [ref. 27661]. Type information: Svetovidov 1978:25 [ref. 6025]. •Valid as Sebastes variabilis (Pallas 1814) -- (Orr & Blackburn 2004:340 [ref. 27661], Page et al. 2013:119 [ref. 32708], Parin et al. 2014:222 [ref. 33547], Kells et al. 2016:152 [ref. 35888]).
