Neotype: MZB 15501. Syntypes: PMJ 813 (2). Described as a species (p. 63) with 4 subspecies. Neotype designated by Jaafar et al. 2009:311, 313 [ref. 30170] (not needed). Comments on types for Periophthalmus variabilis, subspecies variabilis Eggert 1935: Konstantinidis et al. 2016:[5] [ref. 34503]. •Synonym of Periophthalmus novemradiatus (Hamilton 1822) -- (Murdy 1989:43 [ref. 13628]). •Valid as Periophthalmus variabilis Eggert 1935 -- (Talwar & Jhingran 1991:966 [ref. 20764], Rema Devi 1993:184 [ref. 24020] as varlabillis, Jaafar & Larson 2008:951 [ref. 29863], Jaafar et al. 2009:309 [ref. 30170], Murdy 2011:105 [ref. 31728], Kottelat 2013:420 [ref. 32989], Shibukawa in Kimura et al. 2015:80 [ref. 34319], Murdy & Jaafar 2017:27 [ref. 35561], Setiawan et al. 2019:12 [ref. 38283], Taki et al. 2021:477 [ref. 39830]). Current status: Valid as Periophthalmus variabilis Eggert 1935. Gobiidae: Oxudercinae. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: eastern Andaman Sea (Thailand) east to southern Vietnam, south to Sumatra and Java (Indonesia) Habitat: brackish, marine.
