Holotype (unique): ANSP 55227. Type catalog: Böhlke 1984:135 [ref. 13621]. •Valid as Ophidion smithi (Fowler 1934) -- (Nielsen & Cohen 1986:349 [ref. 5700], Goren & Dor 1994:15 [ref. 25356], Robins in Nielsen et al. 1999:40 [ref. 24448] with doubt, Golani & Fricke 2018:39 [ref. 36273], Fricke et al. 2022:[3] 106 [ref. 39865], Nielsen & Uiblein 2022:252 [ref. 39706], Ray & Mohapatra 2022:[2] [ref. 39229]). Current status: Valid as Ophidion smithi (Fowler 1934). Ophidiidae: Ophidiinae. Distribution: Red Sea; Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and Seychelles east to Myanmar and northern Western Australia. Habitat: marine.
