Species epithet after Serranía de Pirre, a mountain range, and is therefore an adjective; ending is pirrensis when classified in the masculine genus Astroblepus. Probable paratypes; original description specifically cited only type (=holotype) but is based on more than one specimen collected at type locality. USNM ledger cites 21 (USNM 78376) and 7 (USNM 78377) specimens, 1 unaccounted for in both lots. •Status uncertain -- (Burgess 1989:449 [ref. 12860]). •Valid as Astroblepus pirrense (Meek & Hildebrand 1913) -- (Ardila Rodríguez 2012:[5] [ref. 32734], Ardila Rodríguez 2013:9 [ref. 33713], Ardila Rodríguez 2014:5 [ref. 33776]). •Valid as Astroblepus pirrensis (Meek & Hildebrand 1913) -- (Schaefer in Reis et al. 2003:314 [ref. 27061], Ferraris 2007:66 [ref. 29155], Ardila Rodriguez 2012:[7] [ref. 32733]). Current status: Valid as Astroblepus pirrensis (Meek & Hildebrand 1913). Astroblepidae. Distribution: Central America: Cana River basin (Panama). Habitat: freshwater.
