Holotype (unique): MNHN 0000-9672. Usually seen as madagascariensis but probably should not be emended; authors however may wish to evoke a prevailing usage argument. Based on description of Choetodon (Tetragonoptrus) miliaris (non Quoy & Gaimard 1825) by Sauvage 1891:259 [ref. 14503], allegedly from Madagascar, but in fact from Mauritius based on Chaetodon chrysurus Desjardins 1834. Distribution: Indian Ocean: Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), East Africa, Seychelles, Comoros, Mozambique Channel, Madagascar and Mascarenes (La Réunion, Mauritius, Rodrigues) east to Andaman Sea, Cocos-Keeling Islands and Christmas Island (Australia).
