Current status: Valid as Heterotilapia buettikoferi (Hubrecht 1881). Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae. Distribution: West Africa: Guinea-Bissau to western Liberia; established in Florida, U.S.A. Introduced in Singapore and Hong Kong (China). IUCN (2020): Least Concern. Habitat: freshwater.
