Syntypes: MCZ 28536 (1), 70979 (4); USNM 153592 [ex MCZ 28536] (1). •Valid as Symphurus varius Garman 1899 -- (Munroe & Nizinski 1990:994 [ref. 19193], Munroe et al. in Fischer et al. 1995:1058 [ref. 22829], Grove & Lavenberg 1997:619 [ref. 24023], Evseenko & Shtaut 2000:801 [ref. 25089], Munroe & McCosker 2001:194 [ref. 25948], McCosker & Rosenblatt 2010:195 [ref. 30957], Grove et al. 2022:19 [ref. 41326]). Current status: Valid as Symphurus varius Garman 1899. Cynoglossidae: Symphurinae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Panama, Cocos Island (Costa Rica), Malpelo Island (Colombia), Galapagos Islands (Ecuador). IUCN (2021): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.
