Holotype: SAIAB [formerly RUSI] 688. Paratypes: AMS 1.20759-001 (1); BMNH 1978.9.12.5 (1); BPBM 22396 (1); CAS 41751 (1); SAIAB [formerly RUSI] 681-682 (1, 1), 687 (1), 689-695 (1 ea.), 946-947 (1, 1), ?11157 (1); SAM 28455 (1); USNM 218874 (1); ZUMT 54143 (1). •Valid as Rhabdosargus thorpei Smith 1979 -- (Smith & Smith 1986:593 [ref. 5710], Bauchot & Skelton 1986:332 [ref. 6210], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:238 [ref. 28072], Fricke et al. 2009:66 [ref. 30213], Fricke et al. 2018:221 [ref. 35805], Parenti 2019:87 [ref. 36892], Iwatsuki & Heemstra 2022:312 [ref. 39785]). Current status: Valid as Rhabdosargus thorpei Smith 1979. Sparidae. Distribution: Southwestern Indian Ocean: Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and East Africa to Europa Island, Madagascar and western Mascarenes (La Réunion). Habitat: brackish, marine.
