Neotype: USNM 219832. Type catalog: Moore & Boardman 1991:27 [ref. 16741] as Coecula bascanium, Smith 1994:29 [ref. 21917]. Holotype apparently lost; originally YPM old zoological catalog no. 826. Neotype designated by Leiby & Yerger 1980:402 [ref. 21920]. •Valid as Bascanichthys bascanium (Jordan 1884) -- (Robins & Ray 1986:61 [ref. 23100], McCosker et al. 1989:331 [ref. 13288], Leiby in Smith 1989:859 [ref. 13285], Boschung 1992:34 [ref. 23239], McEachran & Fechhelm 1998:258 [ref. 23897], McCosker 2003:732 [ref. 26993], Nelson et al. 2004:62 [ref. 27807], Page et al. 2013:62 [ref. 32708], Moreno et al. 2016:13 [ref. 35398], Page et al. 2023:53 [ref. 40505], Fricke et al. 2024:120 [ref. 41622]). Current status: Valid as Bascanichthys bascanium (Jordan 1884). Ophichthidae: Ophichthinae. Distribution: Western Atlantic: North Carolina (U.S.A.) south to Panama, including Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. IUCN (2015): Least Concern. Habitat: marine.
