semicinctus, Ophisurus Richardson [J.] 1848:99 [Ichthyology of the voyage of H. M. S. Erebus & Terror v. 2 (2); ref. 3740] West Africa north of the Equator. Syntypes: BMNH 2011.5.4.1 (1, the primary specimen), BMNH 1845.10.4.8? (stuffed). Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Ophisurus semicinctus Lay & Bennett 1839; however if both species names have not been considered congeneric after 1899, current usage can be maintained but the case should be referred to the Commission for a ruling (Art. 23.9.5). •Treated as valid as Pisodonophis semicinctus (Richardson 1848) -- (Blache et al. 1973:250 [ref. 7185], McCosker 1977:83 [ref. 6836], Bauchot in Whitehead et al. 1986:585 [ref. 13676], Leiby 1990:191 [ref. 13652], Insacco & Zava 1999:283 [ref. 24568], Afonso et al. 1999:82 [ref. 25466], Bañón et al. 2002:879 [ref. 26949], Tweddle & Anderson 2008:6 [ref. 29604], Wirtz et al. 2007:25 [ref. 30263], Bañon et al. 2010:6 [ref. 31029], Ji & Kim 2011:61 [ref. 31152], McCosker 2016:1666 [ref. 34558]). Current status: Valid as Pisodonophis semicinctus (Richardson 1848). Ophichthidae: Ophichthinae. Distribution: Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic. Habitat: brackish, marine.
