Possible holotype: BMNH 1858.8.15.104 (1). Spelled ramacarate on p. 382; spelled ramarata by Gray 1831:9 [ref. 1879]; also as Ramarata coilia in Gray 1831:9 [ref. 1879]. Renamed Engraulis (Coilia) hamiltonii in Gray 1830:Pl. 85 (fig. 3) [ref. 1878]. Information on type locality see Britz 2019:42 [ref. 37532]. Hamilton's original, unpublished illustration reproduced by Britz 2019:Pl. 132 [ref. 37532]. •Valid as Coilia ramcarati (Hamilton 1822) -- (Whitehead et al. 1988:473 [ref. 5725], Ataur Rahman 1989:241 [ref. 24860], Talwar & Jhingran 1991:130 [ref. 20764], Khan 2003:7 [ref. 27710], Ataur Rahman 2003:264 [ref. 31338], Kottelat 2013:53 [ref. 32989], Habib & Islam 2020:Supplementary table p. 6 [ref. 38321], Psomadakis et al. 2020:295 [ref. 37272]). Current status: Valid as Coilia ramcarati (Hamilton 1822). Engraulidae: Coiliinae. Distribution: Northeastern Indian Ocean: Bay of Bengal (India) and Bangladesh to Myanmar. Habitat: brackish, marine.
