Replacement name for Epinephelus thompsoni Whitley 1948, secondarily preoccupied by Stereolepoides thompsoni Fowler 1923 when both are in Epinephelus. •Valid as Epinephelus perplexus Randall, Hoese & Last 1991 -- (Randall et al. 1993:30 [ref. 21004], Heemstra & Randall 1993:210 [ref. 21042], Heemstra & Randall 1999:2545 [ref. 24815], Hoese et al. 2006:1016 [ref. 28999]). •Incertae sedis in Hyporthodus -- (Craig & Hastings 2007:17 [ref. 29046]). •Valid as Hyporthodus perplexus (Randall, Hoese & Last 1991) -- (Craig et al. 2011:285 [ref. 31786], Ma & Craig 2018:456 [ref. 36100] as incertae sedis, Parenti & Randall 2020:86 [ref. 37354], Moore et al. 2022:14 [ref. 39791]).
