niger, Sparus Turton [W.] 1800:789 [A general system of nature v. 1; ref. 17934] Yorkshire, U.K. No types known. See Sparus niger Lacepède 1802; earliest not researched. Usually dated to Montagu 1804:292 [ref. 17786] (who refers to Turton), but apparently appeared first in Turton 1800. Based on, at least in part, Pennant's Brit. Zool. 3. 243. •Synonym of Brama brama (Bonnaterre 1788) -- (Mead 1972:48 [ref. 6976], Mead 1973:387 [ref. 7199], Gomes 1990:758 [ref. 18692]). Current status: Synonym of Brama brama (Bonnaterre 1788). Bramidae. Habitat: marine.
