Spelled Petrocephalus ballayi Boulenger 1909:295 [ref. 14744] and 1909:52 [ref. 14364] and Gosse 1984:108 [ref. 6169] and other authors; original orthography was balayi. •Valid as Petrocephalus balayi Sauvage 1883 -- (Gosse 1984:108 [ref. 6169] as ballayi, Lavoué et al. 2004:519 [ref. 27871], Hopkins et al. 2007:235 [ref. 30019], Lavoué et al. 2010:16 [ref. 30944], Lavoué 2011:26 [ref. 31401], Kramer et al. 2012:2232 [ref. 32160], Lovoué 2012:2167 [ref. 32189], Lavoué & Sullavan 2014:49 [ref. 33262], Stiassny et al. 2021:1686 [ref. 39000], Fermon et al. 2022:126 [ref. 39448]). Current status: Valid as Petrocephalus balayi Sauvage 1883. Mormyridae. Distribution: Western-central Africa: Ogowe River basin (Gabon) and Congo River basin (Democratic Republic of Congo). Habitat: freshwater.
