Holotype (unique): SFC HN 831879. •Synonym of Stiphodon elegans (Steindachner 1879), but a valid subspecies as described -- (Wu in Pan et al. 1991:495 [ref. 23876]). •Valid as Stiphodon multisquamus Wu & Ni 1986 -- (Zhu 1995:184 [ref. 25213], Chen & Tan 2005:241 [ref. 28539], Maeda & Tan 2013:760 [ref. 32886], Maeda & Saeki 2013:216 [ref. 33022], Maeda 2013:(7) [ref. 33023], Kottelat 2013:431 [ref. 32989], Maeda & Palla 2015:393 [ref. 33960], Maeda et al. 2015:246 [ref. 33999], Keith et al. 2015:210 [ref. 34328], Zhang et al. 2016:208 [ref. 34477], Kunishima et al. 2021:38 [ref. 38647], Donaldson et al. 2023:[2] [ref. 40378]). Current status: Valid as Stiphodon multisquamus Wu & Ni 1986. Gobiidae: Sicydiinae. Distribution: Western Pacific: Malaysia, Vietnam, Hainan Island (China) and Ryukyu Islands north to Wakayama (Japan) [amphidromous]. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.
