Holotype (unique): BMNH 1853.11.12.194 [Gronovius coll.] (skin). Type catalog: Wheeler 1958:245 [ref. 13434]. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Balistes verrucosus Linnaeus 1758. Balistes niger Park 1797 is a preoccupied name of the species currently known as Sufflamen chrysopterum (Bloch & Schneider 1801) (see Günther 1870:218 [ref. 1995]). •Synonym of Balistes niger Park 1797 -- (Wheeler 1958:245 [ref. 13434] dated 1794). •Synonym of Sufflamen chrysopterum (Bloch & Schneider 1801) -- (Parenti 2021:660 [ref. 38921]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Sufflamen chrysopterum (Bloch & Schneider 1801). Balistidae. Habitat: marine.
