opistophthalmus, Conger Ranzani [C.] 1839:78 [14], Pl. 12 (figs. 1a-c) [Novi Commentarii Academiae Scientiarum Instituti Bononiensis v. 4 [1840]; ref. 18606] Brazilian Seas [original] or Mediterranean. Holotype (unique): MZUB 989. Appeared first without description as Conger opistophtalmus as Ranzani in Alessandrini 1838:433 [ref. 25852]. Dates to publication in a separate, on p. 14 and Pl. 5 in 1839; journal version in 1840. •Synonym of Ariosoma balearicum (Delaroche 1809) -- (Blache et al. 1973:241 [ref. 7185] with locality as Mediterranean). •Valid as Conger opistophthalmus Ranzani 1839 -- (Smith 1989:495 [ref. 13285]). •Valid as Ariosoma opisthophthalmum (Ranzani 1839) -- (Andreata & Séret 1996:582 [ref. 16204] as opisthophtalma and dated 1838, Menezes et al. in Menezes et al. 2003:36 [ref. 27192] as opistophthalmus and dated 1840, Figueroa & Ehrlich 2006:228 [ref. 29812] dated 1840, Pinheiro et al. 2015:7 [ref. 34324], Carvalho-Filho 2023:55 [ref. 40480]). Current status: Valid as Ariosoma opistophthalmum (Ranzani 1839). Congridae: Bathymyrinae. Distribution: Southwestern Atlantic: Bahia (Brazil) south to Uruguay; eastern Atlantic (?). Habitat: marine.
