Type catalog: Provenzano et al. 1998:18-19 [ref. 24196], Ferraris et al. 2017:[35] [ref. 35236]. •Valid as Sternopygus astrabes Mago-Leccia 1994 -- (Albert & Campos-da-Paz 1998:423 [ref. 23853], Albert in Reis et al. 2003:489 [ref. 27061], Crampton et al. 2004:248 [ref. 27652], Crampton et al. 2004:125 [ref. 27764], Hulen et al. 2005:412 [ref. 28485], Ferraris et al. 2017:[35] [ref. 35236], DoNascimiento et al. 2017:67 [ref. 35633], Torgersen & Albert 2022:725 [ref. 39802], Torgersen et al. 2023:24 [ref. 40151]). Current status: Valid as Sternopygus astrabes Mago-Leccia 1994. Sternopygidae: Sternopyginae. Distribution: South America: Orinoco River and central Amazon River basins, Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela. Habitat: freshwater.
