Current status: Valid as Hypopygus cryptogenes (Triques 1997). Rhamphichthyidae. Distribution: Rio Negro, Rio Preto and Rio Preto da Eva drainages, Amazon basin, Brazil and ? Venezuela. Habitat: freshwater.
