Holotype: BPBM 37833. Paratypes: AMS I.38484-001 (1); BPBM 324833 (14), 32505 (2), 34299 (4), 37830 (4), 37834 (1), 37836 (4); CAS 98064 (1); MNHN 1997-4174 (1); NSMT-P 54270 (1); USNM 347130 (1). •Valid as Apogon rubrimacula Randall & Kulbicki 1998 -- (Allen 1999:2606 [ref. 24812], Allen et al. 2006:1094 [ref. 29004]). •Putative junior synonym of Ostorhinchus cyanosoma (Bleeker 1853) -- (Kuiter & Kozawa 2019:104 [ref. 36965]). •Valid as Ostorhinchus rubrimacula (Randall & Kulbicki 1998) -- (Randall 2005:208 [ref. 28239], Allen & Erdmann 2012:402 [ref. 31980], Fricke et al. 2014:76 [ref. 33932], Mabuchi et al. 2014:200 [ref. 33426], Mabuchi et al. 2015:44 [ref. 34429], Matsunuma et al. 2021:45 [ref. 38940]). Current status: Valid as Ostorhinchus rubrimacula (Randall & Kulbicki 1998). Apogonidae: Apogoninae. Distribution: Western Pacific: Indonesia east to Philippines and Vanuatu, north to Ryukyu Islands and Osumi Islands (southern Japan), south to Queensland (Australia) and New Caledonia. Habitat: marine.
