L.] 1966:226, Figs. 2-3; Pl. 1b [Journal of Zoology (London) v. 148; ref. 806] South China Sea, about 135 miles south-southeast of Hong Kong, 20°05'N, 115°03'E, depth 300 fathoms. Holotype (unique): BMNH 1965.8.11.6. The correct spelling is melanobranchus. •Valid as Parmaturus melanobranchius [sic] (Chan 1966) -- (Compagno 1984:341 [ref. 6846], Compagno & Niem 1998:1291 [ref. 23787], Compagno 1999:480 [ref. 25589], Shinohara et al. 2005:393 [ref. 28370]). •Valid as Parmaturus melanobranchus (Chan 1966) -- (Compagno in Randall & Lim 2000:579 [ref. 25122], Séret & Last 2007:23 [ref. 29377], Hsu et al. 2013:252 [ref. 33043], Ebert et al. 2013:320 [ref. 33045], Weigmann 2016:41 [ref. 34211], Fahmi & Ebert 2018:540 [ref. 35910]). •Valid as Dichichthys melanobranchus Chan 1966 -- (White et al. 2024:21 [ref. 40986]). Current status: Valid as Dichichthys melanobranchus Chan 1966. Dichichthyidae. Distribution: Western Pacific: South China Sea, Hong Kong, Taiwan Strait, Philippines and Ryukyu Islands, southern Japan. Habitat: marine.
