Otdel Zoologii i Fiziologii / Travaux de la Société des Naturalistes de St. Pétersbourg v. 5; ref. 19594] Lakes Chud [Peipus] and Pskov, Estonia and Russia. Neotype: ZISP 53230. Kottelat et al. 2005:183 [ref. 28473] date the name to Polyakov and designate a neotype from Kessler's material; the connection to literature is not clearcut and perhaps unacceptable. •Synonym of Coregonus lavaretus (Linnaeus 1758), but a valid subspecies as described -- (Berg 1948:385 [ref. 12882], Reshetnikov et al. 1997:731 [ref. 24702], Reshetnikov 1998:43 [ref. 23570]). •Placement unclear -- (Kottelat 1997:122 [ref. 22952]). •Valid as Coregonus maraenoides Polyakov 1874 -- (Bogutskaya & Naseka 2004:139 [ref. 28183], Kottelat & Freyhof 2007:375 [ref. 29996], Romanov et al. 2017:823 [ref. 35687], Dyldin et al. 2024:911 [ref. 41701], Iftime & Oţel 2025:19 [ref. 42600]). Current status: Valid as Coregonus maraenoides Polyakov 1874. Salmonidae: Coregoninae. Distribution: Northeastern Europe: Estonia and Russia. IUCN (2024): Endangered. Introduced into other areas of eastern Europe. Habitat: freshwater.
