Holotype: SAIAB [ex RUSI] 9336. Paratypes: ANSP 147308 (1), 149352 [ex RUSI 16057] (1, c&s); SAIAB [ex RUSI] 7599 (1), 7600 (1), 7603 (1). •Valid as Opistognathus margaretae Smith-Vaniz 1983 -- (Smith-Vaniz 1986:726 [ref. 5718], Heemstra & Heemstra 2004:376 [ref. 28072], Smith-Vaniz 2010:39, 42 [ref. 30922], Fricke et al. 2018:163 [ref. 35805], Smith-Vaniz 2022:312 [ref. 39947], Smith-Vaniz 2023:74 [ref. 40049], Fujiwara & Ikeda 2024:8 [ref. 40858]). Current status: Valid as Opistognathus margaretae Smith-Vaniz 1983. Opistognathidae. Distribution: Western Indian Ocean: KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) and East Africa (Mozambique, Kenya) east to Madagascar. Habitat: marine.
