Holotype: USNM 257438. Paratypes: BPBM 28868 (2); HUMZ 98392 (1), 98393-94 (2); IOM (1); MNHN (1); SAM 24519 (1); SIO 73-141 (1), 73-149 (1); USNM 208469 (1), 257439-40 (1, 1); ZMUC P208387 (1), P208390 (1); plus non-types. The gender of Astronesthes is feminine, and trifibulatus an adjective; therefore ending trifibulata is correct. •Valid as Astronesthes trifibulatus Gibbs, Amaoka & Haruta 1984 -- (Gibbs 1986:232 [ref. 5655], Aizawa in Amaoka et al. 1990:120 [ref. 16024], Fricke 1999:89 [ref. 24106], Harold 1999:1906 [ref. 24741], Parin & Borodulina 2003:594 [ref. 27333], Fricke et al. 2018:67 [ref. 35805]). •Valid as Astronesthes trifibulata Gibbs, Amaoka & Haruta 1984 -- (Nakabo 2000:328 [ref. 25086], Nakabo 2002:328 [ref. 26001], Mundy 2005:176 [ref. 28379], Paxton et al. 2006:437 [ref. 28995], Liao et al. 2006:525 [ref. 29419]). Current status: Valid as Astronesthes trifibulata Gibbs, Amaoka & Haruta 1984. Stomiidae: Astronesthinae. Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: South and East Africa and Madagascar east to Hawaiian Islands, Line Islands and Marquesas Islands and north to Taiwan. Habitat: marine.
