macrocephalus, Synodus Cressey [R. F.] 1981:27, Figs. 21, 26b [Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology No. 342; ref. 5574] Somalia, 11°24'N, 51°35'E, depth 75-175 meters. Holotype: USNM 217776. Paratypes: USNM 217739 (6). Plus non-type material: USNM 217616 (1). Preoccupied by Synodus macrocephalus Lacepède 1803 (a cyprinid). Usage of S. macrocephalus, rather than the replacement name Synodus cresseyi Prokofiev 2008, preserved under Art. 23.9.6 in Ho et al. 2010:63 [ref. 30761]. •Synonym of Synodus cresseyi Prokofiev 2008 -- (Endruweit 2025:125 [ref. 42401] as resseyi). •Valid as Synodus macrocephalus Cressey 1981 -- (Russell 1999:1943 [ref. 24747], Manilo & Bogorodsky 2003:S98 [ref. 27377], Ho et al. 2010:63 [ref. 30761], Fricke et al. 2011:358 [ref. 31242], Ho et al. 2016:139 [ref. 34725], Gloerfelt-Tarp & Kailola 2022:75 [ref. 41223], Russell 2022:218 [ref. 39701]). Current status: Valid as Synodus macrocephalus Cressey 1981. Synodontidae. Distribution: Indian Ocean: Somalia and Saya de Malha Bank east to Andaman Sea; southwestern Pacific: Chesterfield Islands (New Caledonia). Habitat: marine.
