Ceratoptera Müller [J.] & Henle [F. G. J.] 1837:118 Fem. Cephaloptera giorna Lesueur 1824. Type by subsequent monotypy. Genus dates to 1837:118 as above with no included species ("...und Ceratoptera N., deren Typus die von Lesueur beschriebene Cephalopter ist;..") Also in Müller & Henle 1838:91 [ref. 3066], "Cephaloptera, Nob. the type of which is the Cephaloptera described by Lesueur" [renamed lesueurii by Swainson 1839] Müller & Henle 1839:186 [ref. 3069]. First addition of species evidently by Bonaparte 1838:6 (of separate) [ref. 4979]. Misspelled Deratoptera by Krefft 1868:3 [ref. 5074] and by Whitley 1936:176 [ref. 6075]. Regarded as an unjustified emendation of, or new spelling for, Dicerobatus Blainville, and not a replacement for it (contrary to current literature). Dates to Swainson 1838:170, 174, with P. massena Swainson mentioned (= Cephalopterus massena Risso 1810) but technically a replacement name for Cephalopterus (see footnote p. 174). Spelled Pterocephala by Swainson 1839 [ref. 4303]. •Synonym of Mobula Rafinesque 1810 -- (Krefft & Stehmann 1973:77 [ref. 7167] as Pterocephala, Cappetta 1987:177 [ref. 6348], White et al. 2018:56 [ref. 37171]).
