Replacement for Gilbertella Eigenmann 1903, preoccupied by Gilbertella Waite 1902 in fishes. Lycodon Kner [R.] 1860:52 Masc. Cynopotamus molossus Kner 1858. Type by monotypy. Kner placed his new species molossus in the established genus Cynopotamus but suggested it might represent a distinct genus for which he proposed Lycodon. Objectively invalid; preoccupied by Lycodon Fitzinger 1826 in Reptilia. •Synonym of Roestes Günther 1864 -- (Menezes 1974:219 [ref. 7129], Menezes & Lucena 1998:285 [ref. 23657], Toledo-Piza in Reis et al. 2003:236 [ref. 27061], Torrente-Vilara et al. 2008:103 [ref. 29867]). 1°Homonym. Current status: Synonym of Roestes Günther 1864. Acestrorhynchidae: Roestinae.

Roestes (subgenus of Anacyrtus) Günther [A.] 1864:345, 347 Masc. Cynopotamus molossus Kner 1858. Type by monotypy. Described in key (p. 345) as a section or subgenus of Anacyrtus with corresponding single species on p. 347. Treated as masculine, Art. 30.2.4. Same as Lycodon Kner 1860 (preoccupied) but Günther does not indicate he was providing a replacement name. •Valid as Roestes Günther 1864 -- (Menezes 1974 [ref. 7129], Géry 1977:311 [ref. 1597], Prada-Pedreros 1997:353 [ref. 24956], Menezes & Lucena 1998:285 [ref. 23657], Lucena & Menezes 1998:261, 274 [ref. 23776] in new subfamily Roestinae, Britski et al. 1999:55 [ref. 24147], Toledo-Piza in Reis et al. 2003:236 [ref. 27061], Torrente-Vilara et al. 2008:103 [ref. 29867], Mirande 2009:6 [ref. 30267] in Characidae, Cynodontinae, Mirande 2010:480 [ref. 31006] in Cynodontinae with question, Oliveira et al. 2011:12 [ref. 31685] in Roestinae, Mattox & Toledo-Piza 2012:896 [ref. 32651], Sarmiento et al. 2014:186 [ref. 35004]). Type by original designation (also monotypic). •Synonym of Roestes Günther 1864 -- (Menezes 1974:221 [ref. 7129]). •Synonym of Gilbertolus Eigenmann 1903, but type species placed in Roestes on p. 287 -- (Menezes & Lucena 1998:281 [ref. 23657], Toledo-Piza in Reis et al. 2003:235 [ref. 27061]).
