Labrus Linnaeus [C.] 1758:282 Masc. Labrus mixtus Linnaeus 1758. Type by designation of the ICZN in opinion 1954. Type usually given as first designated by Bonaparte 1841:puntata 156, fasc. 30 [ref. 512] but Bonaparte listed the type only as L. vetula Bloch (not an included species). Earliest technical designation not researched; however, Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:253 [ref. 14214] indicated that the holotype of bimaculatus was a Cichlasoma; Opinion 1954 [Case 2905] set aside earlier type designations (Labrus bimaculatus) and established the type species as Labrus mixtus Linnaues 1758; thereby insuring that Labrus is a genus of labrid fishes. On the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology. •Valid as Labrus Linnaeus 1758 -- (Bauchot & Quignard 1973:426 [ref. 7204], Richards & Leis 1984:544 [ref. 13668], Quignard & Pras in Whitehead et al. 1986:925 [ref. 13676], Parenti & Randall 2000:27 [ref. 24943], Parin 2003:S17 [ref. 28536], Kuiter 2010:81 [ref. 35285], Lipej & Dulčić 2010:53 [ref. 36649], Parin et al. 2014:381 [ref. 33547]). Current status: Valid as Labrus Linnaeus 1758. Labridae.
