No types known. Not available from this work, not binomial, although attributed to Strøm by Bonnaterre 1788:55 [ref. 4940] and Krøyer 1843-1845:231 [ref. 18347] (as Raniceps fuscus Strøm). No types known. Based on Strøm 1762:322, 323 [ref. 21085] where name appeared as "Blennius fuscus, ore cirrato, pinnis omnibus setaceis" which is considered as not binomial. Spelled gruniens in Bloch 1786:157 [ref. 465]. •Synonym of Raniceps raninus (Linnaeus 1758) -- (Fernholm & Wheeler 1983:225-226 [ref. 20707] based on specimen 5633, but they point out that Willughby's account is clearly referable to a toadfish). •See second account of Cottus grunniens and see Hutchins 1981:339 [ref. 6830].
