Species in the genus Astrocottus: [ 3 ] records

leprops, Astrocottus Bolin [R. L.] 1936:331, Pl. 34 (fig. B); Fig. 27 [Proceedings of the United States National Museum v. 83 (no. 2987); ref. 504] Tsugaru Strait, Japan, 41°35'50"N, 140°36'45"E, Albatross station 4808, depth 47 fathoms. Holotype (unique): USNM 94730. •Valid as Astrocottus leprops Bolin 1936 -- (Yabe in Masuda et al. 1984:325 [ref. 6441], Shinohara et al. 1996:176 [ref. 26605], Nakabo 2000:632 [ref. 25086], Yabe & Maruyama 2001:61 [ref. 25245], Nakabo 2002:632 [ref. 26001], Tsuruoka et al. 2008:27 [ref. 29568]). matsubarae, Astrocottus Katayama [M.] 1942:334, Fig. 1 [Dobutsugaku Zasshi = Zoological Magazine Tokyo v. 54 (no. 8); ref. 22718] Kakogawa, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, Inland Sea of Japan. Holotype: NSMT-P 18253. Paratypes: (1, missing). The spelling matsubarae is acceptable; early workers almost certainly Latinized the name first, and then added an 'e' (Art. 31.1.1) [WNE, 12 Mar. 2012] -- we suggest using matsubarae when the species is treated as valid. •Valid as Astrocottus matsubarae Katayama 1942 -- (Watanabe 1960:24 [ref. 11959], Yabe in Masuda et al. 1984:325 [ref. 6441], Nakabo 2000:632 [ref. 25086], Yabe & Maruyama 2001:61 [ref. 25245], Nakabo 2002:632 [ref. 26001], Tsuruoka et al. 2008:29 [ref. 29568]). Current status: Valid as Astrocottus matsubarae Katayama 1942. Psychrolutidae: Psychrolutinae. Distribution: Western North Pacific: Japan. Habitat: brackish, marine.
