Lectotype: MSNVE P-8 (largest lectotype). Syntypes: (2) MSNVE P-8 (1). Leptocephalus is a catch-all name for larval eels. Lectotype selected by Smith & Castle 1982. •Synonym of Nettastoma melanurum Rafinesque 1810 -- (Castle 1975:25 [ref. 25984]). •Valid as "Leptocephalus" bellottii D'Ancona 1928 -- (Dor 1984:32 [ref. 29757] as bellotii, Goren & Dor 1994:8 [ref. 25356] as belloti). •A species of Nettenchelys, possibly the same as Nettenchelys gephyrs Castle & Smith 1981 -- (Smith & Castle 1982:14 [ref. 5453]). •Valid as Nettenchelys bellottii (D'Ancona 1928) -- (Smith et al. 2015:109 [ref. 34125], Golani & Fricke 2018:26 [ref. 36273]).
