Syntypes: OM I.96 (1), QM I.209 (dry mount). Original as aetate-varians. Specimen ZMUO J2350 is labeled a syntype but is not a type according to Pethon 1969:1, 6 [ref. 19268]. Later called semistrigatus by De Vis 1882. •Synonym of Scatophagus argus (Linnaeus 1766) -- (Parenti 2004:2 [ref. 27605], Allen et al. 2006:1722 [ref. 29090]). •Synonym of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846) -- (Kottelat 2013:439 [ref. 32989] with question) Current status: Synonym of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846). Scatophagidae. Habitat: freshwater, brackish, marine.

alternams, Scatophagus Castelnau [F. L.] 1878:47 [Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales v. 3 (pt 1); ref. 762] Type catalog: Bauchot 1963:150 [ref. 20718]. Original description was brief and conditional, and the species was not treated as valid in this work. Later validation by Castelnau. Species epithet was misprinted as altermans in original description according to Castelnau 1879:376 [ref. 764], and this was mentioned in a footnote by Bauchot 1963:150 [ref. 20718] -- see Parenti 2004:4 [ref. 27605]. From Norman River, Queensland, Australia. •Nomen nudum, in the synonymy of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846) -- (Parenti 2004:4 [ref. 27605]) but in Scatophagus by Kottelat 2013. Nomen Nudum. Current status: Synonym of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846). Scatophagidae.

papuensis, Selenotoca Fraser-Brunner [A.] 1938:75, Fig. 2 (upper) [Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 11) v. 2 (no. 7) (art. 9); ref. 17192] New Guinea. Holotype: BMNH 1938.6.11.1. Paratypes: not researched. •Valid as Selenotoca papuensis Fraser-Brunner 1938 -- (Kottelat et al. 1993:122 [ref. 23448], Tyler & Sorbini 1999:370 [ref. 25312], Parenti 2004:3 [ref. 27605]). •Synonym of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846) -- (Kottelat 2001:3626 [ref. 26299], Kottelat 2013:439 [ref. 32989]). Current status: Synonym of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846). Scatophagidae. Distribution: Western Pacific: Sulawesi and Papua New Guinea. Habitat: brackish, marine.

Dates to the appearence in the Brisbane Courier (newspaper; researched by D. Hoese, email 23 Jan. 2010). •Synonym of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846) -- (Kottelat 2013:439 [ref. 32989] with question). Current status: Synonym of Selenotoca multifasciata (Richardson 1846). Scatophagidae. Habitat: marine.
