Type designated by the ICZN in Opinion 1584. Described as a section of the subgenus Ictalurus which in turn was described as a subgenus of Pimelodus. Also in Rafinesque 1820:65 (Dec.) [ref. 3592]. Amiurus Agassiz 1846:47 [ref. 64] is an unjustified emendation. Haustor (subgenus of Ameiurus) Jordan [D. S.] & Evermann [B. W.] 1896:135, 136, 137 [Bulletin of the United States National Museum No. 47; ref. 2443] Masc. Pimelodus nigricans Lesueur 1819. Based on a misidentified type species (see Speirs 1952 [ref. 14251]). The description given by Jordan & Evermann is of an Ictalurus, the original type species is a Lota (Lotidae). Ferraris 2007:208 [ref. 29155] identifies the type species as Pimelodus nigricans Lesueur 1819. Type apparently established by Jordan 1920. •Synonym of Lota Oken 1817 -- (Speirs 1952:102 [ref. 14251]). •Synonym of Ictalurus Rafinesque 1820 -- (Ferraris 2007:208 [ref. 29155]).
