Hypodytes Gistel [J.] 1848:VIII [Naturgeschichte des Thierreichs; ref. 1822] Masc. Apistus alatus Cuvier 1829. Type by being a replacement name. Apparently technically is a replacement for Apistes Cuvier. Hypodytes was proposed by Gistel as a replacement for "Aspistes Quoy, Astrol., Fisch.", but Apistus Cuvier was used by Quoy & Gaimard, not the earlier non-latinized "Apistes" Cuvier 1829. Should be treated as an objective synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Treated as valid as Hypodytes Gistel 1848 -- (Nakabo in Masuda et al. 1984:319 [ref. 6441], Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:160 [ref. 15964], Paxton et al. 1989:442 [ref. 12442] with wrong authorship). •Should be treated as an objective synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. •Treated as valid as Hypodytes Gistel 1848 -- (Nakabo in Masuda et al. 1984:319 [ref. 6441], Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:165 [ref. 15964], Paxton et al. 1989:442 [ref. 12442] with wrong authorship). •Synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829 -- (Mandrytsa 2001:258 [ref. 25636]). Current status: Synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Synanceiidae: Apistinae.

Paracentropogon Bleeker [P.] 1876:5, 66 [Verhandelingen der Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen, Afdeeling Natuurkunde (Amsterdam) v. 16 (art. 2); ref. 12248] Masc. Apistus longispinis Cuvier 1829. Type by original designation. Type of Hypodytes Gistel 1848 was regarded as A. longispinis by Jordan 1919:235 [ref. 2410] such that Hypodytes is a senior objective synonym of Paracentropogon, but we interpret Gistel's Hypodytes to be a replacement of Apistus Cuvier 1829, with type Apistus alatus. Also appeared in Bleeker 1876 [ref. 450]. •Synonym of Hypodytes Gistel 1848 -- (Lindberg & Krasyukova 1987:160 [ref. 15964]). •Valid as Paracentropogon Bleeker 1876 -- (Washington et al. 1984:440 [ref. 13660], Paxton et al. 1989:446 [ref. 12442], Poss 1999:2297 [ref. 24796], Mandrytsa 2001:262 [ref. 25636], Allen et al. 2006:901 [ref. 29078], Prokofiev 2008:306 [ref. 29592], Kottelat 2013:315 [ref. 32989], Motomura et al. 2017:69 [ref. 35490], Chungthanawong & Motomura 2021:[2] [ref. 38168]). An overlooked name, apparently based on a species of Apistus. •Apparently a synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Current status: Synonym of Apistus Cuvier 1829. Synanceiidae: Apistinae.

Pentaroge Günther [A.] 1860:132 [Catalogue of the fishes in the British Museum v. 2; ref. 1963] Fem. Apistus marmoratus Cuvier 1829.
