Appeared without species; first inclusion of species under name attributed to Scopoli not researched. Fowler (MS) lists the type as Silurus batrachus Linnaeus as designated by Eigenmann 1910:380 [ref. 1224] for Aspredo Bleeker. Mees 1987:183 [ref. 11510] indicates type is by subsequent designation of Fowler 1954:39 [our ref. 1465]. Type designated by Desmarest 1856:282 [ref. 17401] is Silurus callichthys Linnaeus 1758 -- see Whitley 1939:225 [ref. 25866] but Whitley has wrong date for Desmarest. Not Aspredo Swainson 1838. Cotylephorus blochii Swainson 1838 (= Platystacus cotylephorus Bloch 1794). Type by monotypy in 1838:354; blochii Swainson is an unneeded substitute for P. cotylephorus. Also in Swainson 1839 [ref. 4303]:189 (as Cotilephorus), and p. 308 (as Cotylephorus). Cotilephorus is an incorrect subsequent spelling. Cotylophorus Agassiz 1846:102 [ref. 64] is an unjustified emendation. •Objective synonym of Platystacus Bloch 1794, which Mees 1987:175 [ref. 11510] treats as a synonym of Aspredo Scopoli 1777. •Synonym of Platystacus Bloch 1794 -- (Friel in Reis et al. 2003:264 [ref. 27061], Ferraris 2007:61 [ref. 29155]).
