clarkae, Brotula Hubbs [C. L.] 1944:167, Fig. 2 [Copeia 1944 (no. 3); ref. 10743] 5 miles south of Cape San Lazaro, north of Magdalena Bay, Baja California, Mexico (floating at surface). Holotype: UMMZ 141263. Paratypes: UMMZ 141264 (1); USNM 77702 (1, also holotype of B. maculata), 94042 (1). We treat as a new species description as indicated by the author, but it could be regarded as a replacement name with USNM 77702 as type. •Valid as Brotula clarkae Hubbs 1944 -- (Allen & Robertson 1994:73 [ref. 22193], Bussing & López S. 1994:74 [ref. 23101], De La Cruz Agüero et al. 1997:243 [ref. 24545], Chirichigno F. & Vélez D. 1998:223 [ref. 24555], Nielsen & Cohen in Nielsen et al. 1999:23 [ref. 24448], Thomson et al. 2000:53 [ref. 25640], Nelson et al. 2004:91 [ref. 27807], Greenfield 2005:80 [ref. 28204], Love et al. 2005:50 [ref. 37547], Castellanos-Galindo et al. 2006:197 [ref. 28944], Page et al. 2013:94 [ref. 32708], Love et al. 2021:81 [ref. 39279], Page et al. 2023:108 [ref. 40505], Siccha-Ramirez et al. 2023:147 [ref. 40816]). Current status: Valid as Brotula clarkae Hubbs 1944. Ophidiidae: Brotulinae. Distribution: Eastern Pacific: Pacific coast of southern Baja California Sur (Mexico) south to northern Peru, including Gulf of California (Mexico). Habitat: marine.

J.] 1858:92 [Archiv für Naturgeschichte v. 24 (pt. 1); ref. 2576] Apparently an unneeded new name for Brotula imberbis Temminck & Schlegel 1846. •Synonym of Sirembo imberbis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846) -- (Cohen & Robins 1986:257 [ref. 5254], Nielsen & Cohen in Nielsen et al. 1999:89 [ref. 24448], Nielsen et al. 2014:8 [120] [ref. 33532]). Current status: Synonym of Sirembo imberbis (Temminck & Schlegel 1846). Ophidiidae: Neobythitinae. Habitat: marine.

maculata, Brotula Day [F.] 1868:196 [Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1868 (pt 1); ref. 1076] Madras, India. Syntypes: (3) BMNH 1868.4.15.1-2 (2), ZSI 3115 (1, lost).
