Neotype designated by Lima 2017:122, 124 [ref. 35071] with discussion of the original type locality. Distribution: South America: Amazon River and its main tributaries (Brazil, Peru and Bolivia); Orinoco River basin (Colombia, Guyana and Venezuela). Introduced in southeastern and central Brazil. Habitat: freshwater.

Lectotype: MNHN A-9832. Paralectotypes: MNHN 0098 (1), A-8615 (1). Type catalog: Bertin 1948:15 [ref. 19577]. Lectotype selected by Géry & Mahnert 1992:816 [ref. 27146].
