Based on Canthigaster cinctus of McCulloch 1922:245. The species epithet axiologus stems from the Greek words αξίος and λόγος, the latter Latinised to logus; it is a noun in apposition and does not change its ending, though Canthigaster is feminine. •Synonym of Canthigaster coronata (Vaillant & Sauvage 1875) -- (Allen & Randall 1977:486 [ref. 6714]). •Valid as Canthigaster axiologus Whitley 1931 (sometimes seen as axiologa) -- (Randall et al. 2008:6 [ref. 29943], Motomura et al. 2010:237 [ref. 31256], Williams et al. 2012:84 [ref. 32264], Allen & Erdmann 2012:1091 [ref. 31980], Motomura et al. 2015:31 [ref. 34709], Matsuura et al. 2020:87 [ref. 37714], Wada et al. 2021:51 [ref. 38521], Gloerfelt-Tarp & Kailola 2022:303 [ref. 41223]). Current status: Valid as Canthigaster axiologus Whitley 1931. Tetraodontidae. Distribution: Eastern Indian Ocean, western Pacific: northern Australia east to French Polynesia, north to Amami Islands (southern Japan). Habitat: marine.
