Petrometopon Gill [T. N.] 1865:105 [Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia v. 17; ref. 1710] Neut. Serranus guttatus of Poey (= Sparus cruentatus Lacepède 1803). Type by monotypy. Type given as Serranus guttatus Poey, apparently a subsequent identification and not an original description; possibly goes back to Perca guttata Linnaeus, or based on a misidentified type species. Uriphaeton (subgenus of Eteles) Swainson [W.] 1839:168, 202 [The natural history and classification v. 2; ref. 4303] Masc. Serranus phaeton Valenciennes 1828. Type by monotypy. A made-up fish, a Cephalopholis with the tail of a Fistularia attached (see Bleeker 1875:31, footnote [ref. 4861], also Jordan 1919:198 [ref. 2410]).
